Bridget Backus McBride has a BFA from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit (graphic design and art direction). She apprenticed in the printing industry during that time and later worked in advertising agencies in Detroit, Minneapolis, Seattle, and Portland upon graduating, and she has hit the ground running ever since!
Bridget has been involved with Arabian horses for many years and has owned and shown Dalmatians for 28 years, so there’s always a set of spots around her- inspiring even her business name! Bridget is married to an athletic shoe designer and they have two lovely daughters; their oldest is in her first year at George Fox University and their younger daughter is a Junior at Newberg High School- future WOW members for sure!
Why did you select the business you are in? Even as a child I’ve always been oriented to art, so it really wasn’t a struggle to know what I wanted to do — I just needed to figure out how I wanted to express that passion. I’m continuously curious about the world around me and I’m in the perfect field to express that.
What do you like most about what you do? Communicating a message through words and visuals in any form never, never gets old for me. Each project that crosses my desk brings fresh challenges and I enjoy applying my knowledge in a way that helps a client reach their objectives.
Why did you join WOW and what is the most rewarding or valuable aspect of being a WOW member? I joined WOW in 2012 because I love its focus of women supporting women in the community. It’s given me a wonderful opportunity to meet such a great group of ladies, especially by participating in several Small Groups. I wouldn’t have the opportunity to do that on my own. My work can be a smidge isolating so it’s been incredibly valuable in getting me out-the-door in a meaningful way.
Who could be an ideal potential client for you? It is such a joy to connect with clients that appreciate the expertise I have to offer. I really marinate, study, and immerse myself on what their objectives and goals are and how to put that out to the world for them. What a great feeling it is hearing the positive feed back after seeing a book I’ve designed come off the press and later loaded on a e-reader for a client, or seeing a branding campaign take off after a client’s grand opening.
What do you like to do for fun? On a weekly basis I enjoy quiet time riding my horse and playing with my newest dalmatian, Yahtzee. I also have fun with photography, blogging/writing, stitching/sewing/weaving, and skiing (downhill and cross country) when weather permits.
What are five things you cannot live without? The five things that I cannot live without would be my family, pets, thoughtful expression in art and words, and things that make me laugh. I also need a fabulous cup of tea every day or I’ll fall over.
Where is your favorite place to vacation? I’ve traveled a lot, but I love the Pacific Northwest and never tire of exploring this beautiful landscape. Living in the West is like being on vacation every day for me.
